This is the first time I have created an assignment for writing and presenting speeches, and it was a lot of fun! I wanted to document my thought process and how I created this pretty simple assignment. :)
Step 1: Have a Topic In Mind
Without a topic, you will not have any idea where to begin. I found my inspiration through a book that the student and I will be going through (The Giver, by Lois Lowry). I sectioned the book into a three month long course. You can find the link to this article and the design here:
Step 2: Break it Down
I broke this speech down into three steps for my student: researching, organizing the information, and presenting. In this assignment, the student is responsible for researching by him/herself, but this may not be suitable for students who are younger or have a less developed vocabulary. This is for a more advanced student and should be adjusted or created for your student's specific wants and needs.
Step 3: Meeting the Student's Language Level
If your directions and organizers are too complicated for your student, it might cause some frustration and discouragement for them. Remember to write definitions, directions and whatever else your student needs in words that are appropriate for their language level and age.
Step 4: Create the Worksheets
Make your organizers, outlines, and worksheets simple. You can add a few pictures in or videos if you think it would help your student along. :) Make sure you think about what your student might need including how tight their work (or school) schedule is. We want to make the assignment challenge their language skills, and not challenging their computer skills.
I am an e-learning teacher, and so I want to make the materials accessible to my students. I am attaching a PDF copy of this assignment that you can't edit easily. I would send my students the document in Word format. This way they can make edits and changes independently, and then turn it in easier when they are finished. This also saves on ink and paper. Save the trees! Yay. :)
This is just an example of one of the speeches I would have my students complete while reading this book. Speaking is an important part of our lives. We need to know how to use it formally and informally. It is also essential to use concise wording to not skew our points.
That is it for now! I hope you enjoy reading through this lesson. :) Feel free to ask questions in the comments or contact me via LinkedIn! Bye. :)
